Many of the products we use to get clean—soaps, facial cleansers and body washes—might actually be doing us more harm than good.
One of the main ways your body acquires nutrients, other than eating, is transdermally, through your skin. Your skin is your largest organ—22 square feet on average—and 60 percent of the substances you put on it are eventually absorbed into the bloodstream.
Twenty four hours per day your are wearing clothes and sleeping between sheets that were washed using health-destroying chemicals and they are being absorbed into your bloodstream through your skin.
Chemicals in common soaps are no joke. They can disrupt your hormones, promote allergies, lead to reproductive issues and increase risk of cancer. With serious side effects like these, you need to be particular about what you put on your skin.
Virtually all soaps, shampoos, detergents and degreasers are sweet-smelling killers. Not only are they dangerous, but toxic chemicals like formaldehyde used in making soaps have a horrible smell and that is why soaps are heavily scented to disguise these disgusting odors.
Like a huge sponge, your skin is absorbing these chemicals and carrying them into your bloodstream twenty four hours per day. Virtually all of these chemicals are killing you slowly. Not only do they wreak havoc upon human health, but they are also destructive of the environment in which we live.
Billions of pounds of these toxic chemicals are produced annually in the US. They are found in virtually all of our waterways and in aquatic organisms, from algae to fish to dolphins, as well as in human urine, blood and breast milk.
TriclosanYour soap or toothpaste could be affecting your muscle strength. A new study has found that Triclosan, an antibacterial widely used in shampoos, soaps, deodorants, toothpastes and other body-care products, reduces muscular strength.
Investigators performed several experiments to evaluate the effects of triclosan on muscle activity, using doses similar to those that people and animals may be exposed to during everyday life. In “test tube” experiments, triclosan impaired the ability of isolated heart muscle cells and skeletal muscle fibers and muscle movements, including heartbeats to contract.
Mice had an 18 percent reduction in grip strength for up to 60 minutes after being given a single dose of triclosan. Grip strength is a test that is widely used to measure limb strength.
The team also found that triclosan impairs heart and skeletal muscle contractility in living animals. The effects of triclosan on cardiac function were really dramatic. Anesthetized mice had up to a 25 percent reduction in heart function within 20 minutes of exposure to the chemical.
“Although triclosan is not regulated as a drug, this compound acts like a potent cardiac depressant” concluded Chiamvimonvat, one of the researchers.
Triclosan has been around for the past 40 years and has been incorporated into many anti-bacterial household products within the past decade.
This anti-microbial agent is also finding its way inside of human noses, where it promotes the colonization of staphylococcus aureus bacteria, predisposing people to infections.
“Triclosan was found in nasal passages of 41 percent of adults sampled,” said Blaise Boles, an assistant professor at University of Michigan.
A higher proportion of subjects with triclosan also had S. aureus colonization, which poses an infectious problem in some populations, especially anyone undergoing surgery.
Other studies have found traces of triclosan in human fluids including serum, urine and milk.
Research has found that high concentrations of triclosan can disrupt the endocrine system and decrease heart and skeletal muscle function. It is really common in hand soaps, toothpastes, mouthwashes and deodorants but there is no evidence it does a better job than regular soap.
“This agent may have unintended consequences in our bodies. While there has not been much scientific evidence suggesting the benefit of Triclosan in soaps, there are several harmful effects. This chemical is known to cause irritation to the skin and interfere with the normal functioning of reproductive and thyroid
FormaldehydeThis chemical is commonly found in body washes, cleansers, shampoos and conditioners among other things. Used to embalm human corpses, it is added to household products to help prevent bacterial growth.
According to the International Agency for Research on Carcinogens, it has been associated with occupational cancers such as nasopharyngeal and nasal cancers. It has also been termed as a human carcinogen. It is a major cause of skin allergies and it can even affect the immune system.
ParabensThis chemical is widespread throughout the cosmetic and beauty industry as a preservative to prevent mold, bacteria and yeast from growing in products. Parabens are commonly found in many body washes, shampoos and cleansers among others. The use of this chemical has been linked with breast tumors found in women.
Benzoyl PeroxideThis chemical is usually used for the products meant for acne treatment. Most products that contain this chemical have a minute quantity such as 2.5% or 5%. It can cause dryness of the skin leading to irritation. The effects can include burning, peeling, itching and even swelling. It has also been classified as a potentially carcinogenic (cancer causing) chemical.
DandC Yellow 11The colors used in the skin care and other beauty products are characterized by the prefix D&C which stands for Drugs and Cosmetics, followed by the color and its code. This chemical is found in soaps and is safe only when the use is external. It can be extremely harmful if used in the area surrounding the eyes.
You may have read that washing your face twice is essential to keep your skin soft and beautiful. But what you use to wash your face is also important. Using harsh soaps which you bathe with is not recommended by skin specialists. This is because, these contain harsh chemicals which can strip your skin of its natural oils and leave it feeling dry and itchy. Regular use will only worsen the condition.
Your face’s skin is extremely thin and requires constant and gentle care. It is a good idea to pick a face wash which will help cleanse out the dirt without harming your skin.
LyeOne of the main ingredients found in many soaps is classified as a caustic chemical that has the potential to cause a lot of damage to your skin. If lye is present, it can dry out the skin and even cause burning.
FragranceSoap companies have the liberty to pass on their chemical cocktails under the fragrance label since that would mean not having to disclose all the ingredients (it is a trade secret after all). However, many companies use this label to sneak in some of the harmful chemicals such as phthalates in the products. There have been cases reported where constant exposure has resulted in asthma and migraines among others.
Sodium Laureth SulfateAlmost all foaming agents found in personal care and cleaning products contain this chemical. While it is known to be an irritant to eye, skin and lungs, studies show that it has the potential to combine with other chemicals to form carcinogenic compounds. These compounds of nitrosamines can also be the cause of several respiratory and kidney related diseases.
PEG-6This ingredient is also commonly found in most soaps and is also carcinogenic. Regular exposure has shown a link between usage and chances of breast cancer.
Symptoms of soap induced chemical poisoning include• Eye, skin and mouth irritations
• Membrane alterations
• Damage to the brain, heart, spleen and liver
• Chronic irritant and cause of dermatitis
• Compromised skin barrier, rendering it open to entry of bacteria
• Compromised cell function
• Corroding of the hair follicle and cause of hair loss
