Nuts About Coconut Water

Mike's Health Store. Price is What You Pay. Value is What You Get.

By guest contributor Gregory Schnese

Did you know a coconut isn’t a nut at all, but is a drupe? I know, that’s what I said. What’s a drupe? A drupe is a fruit in which an outer fleshy part surrounds a shell. Aside from coconuts, some of my favorite drupes are coffee beans, mangos, olives, and pistachios. If this is news to you, you probably don’t know how healthy and wonderful a coconut, it’s water in particular, can be.

Coconut water is a popular drink, common in tropical regions. Its amazing taste and health benefits are extraordinary; I’m pretty sure it’s just a matter of time before coconut water becomes the latest fad in the U.S. too —you heard it here first.

Coconut water has many benefits, it’s...

Low in carbs
Low in calories
99 percent fat free
Contains no cholesterol

Hydration – Coconut water is an isotonic drink, which means it naturally contains the electrolytes your body needs to hydrate itself. This is why it is often referred to as “nature’s sports drink.” After a vigorous workout, there is nothing better than drinking some coconut water. Remember to start drinking water or coconut water before you feel thirsty. While you’re exercising, your body loses water through sweat (to cool you). Once you’ve finished, it’s important to hydrate yourself. To stay hydrated, I’ve tried many different sports drinks; now I drink coconut water. It’s by far my favorite because it tastes good and makes me feel great.

Calcium – Coconut water is a great way to get more calcium, this is especially important for women. An 8 ounce serving of coconut water contains more than 14 mg of calcium. (An 8 oz. serving of milk contains 300 mg of calcium)

Vitamins and Minerals - Jammed packed with vitamins and minerals, coconut water contains vitamin C, B6, Magnesium, Potassium, Sodium and Manganese. Coconut water is rich in Arginine (283 mg per 8oz. serving) which is a heart healthy amino acid.

A word of caution here about arginine

Don't take arginine within 2 hours of taking drugs that dilate the blood vessels, such as nitroglycerin or sildenafil (Viagra). However, for most people the health benefits of drinking coconut water in moderate amounts(16 ounces per day) far outweighs any risks.

Where The Sun Shines

Coconut water comes from young coconuts; typically grown in tropical Asia and Trinidad and Tobago—where the weather is oh so nice. As a coconut matures, most of the liquid (the coconut water) is absorbed into its flesh. Therefore, coconuts must be harvested while they are young and green. Have you ever seen a cartoon or movie where someone is stuck on a desert island, then they crack open a coconut and drink its water? Well, they’re drinking coconut water from young coconuts.

If you don't have any coconut trees growing in your backyard, you can still reap the benefits by taking LiveGood E3

Going Bananas!

Mike's Health Store. Price is What You Pay. Value is What You Get.

Bananas contain three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose - combined with fiber. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy. Research has proved that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world's leading athletes.

A banana can help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must for our daily diet.

Depression: According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND among people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.

PMS: Forget the pills - eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

Anemia: High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.

Blood Pressure: This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it the perfect to beat blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

Brain Power: 200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

Constipation: High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

Hangovers: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.

Heartburn: Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

Morning Sickness: Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.

Mosquito bites: Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

Nerves: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.

Overweight and at work: Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and crisps. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady.

Ulcers: The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronic ulcer cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.

Temperature control: Many other cultures see bananas as a "cooling" fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand, for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer, tryptophan.

Smoking: Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B6, B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Stress: Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body's water balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be re-balanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.

Strokes: According to research in "The New England Journal of Medicine", eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%"

Warts: Those keen on natural alternatives swear that if you want to kill off a wart, take a piece of banana skin and place it on the wart, with the yellow side out. Carefully hold the skin in place with a plaster or surgical tape!

A banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrate, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around.

A banana contains: 86 calories in a medium banana
1 gram of protein
3 grams of dietary fiber
26.9 g carbohydrates
23.9 g sugar
467 mg Potassium
43 mg Magnesium
27 mg Phosphorus
7 mg Calcium
1.3 mg Selenium
.4 mg Iron
Also trace amounts of zinc, manganese and copper
95 IU Vitamin A
11 mg Vitamin C
22.5 mcg Folate (important during pregnancy)
.7mcg Vitamin B6
.6 mg Niacin
.31 mg Pantothenic Acid
.67 IU Vitamin E

Soooooo.......... "A banana a day keeps the doctor away"

Why Are So Many Sick?

Mike's Health Store. Price is What You Pay. Value is What You Get.

The Threat Hanging over Our Heads

Most Americans are not aware of a very powerful threat hanging over our heads. It’s not terrorism, oil shortages or some other political issue. The clearest and most pressing danger lies in the fact that every second American has at least one chronic illness, while 60 million people suffer from multiple chronic conditions. Despite advances in modern medicine our health is worse today than ever before in our history! There is no doubt that sickness affects us directly, causing untold suffering and hardship. I’m here to tell you how the situation got so bad and what you can do about it. Please read on.

In the year 2000, the U.S. population was 276 million. Nearly half of the population – 125 million Americans – lived with some type of chronic condition. About 60 million lived with multiple chronic conditions. Examples of chronic conditions are diabetes, cancer, glaucoma and heart disease. The number of people with chronic conditions is growing at an alarming rate.

So Why Are We Sick?

I’ll be brutally honest here so there are no misunderstandings: We get sick because our lack of health is economically profitable for a lot of big companies and shareholders. Including:

* The food industry with all the ‘designer’ junk foods and beverages that hold no nutritional value and actually make us fat and sick.

* All the polluting industries that fill our lives and bodies with harmful chemicals and toxins. The next time you buy tooth paste, check the poison warning on the tube. And you put that in your mouth!?

The ‘sick care’ industry figured out long ago that there’s a lot more money to be made in treating symptoms with drugs and surgeries in expensive hospitals than in patient education, prevention and natural medicine. There’s a lot of money to be made in making and keeping us sick. As professor Paul Zane Pilzer explains in his best-selling book, The Wellness Revolution: “Incredibly powerful economic forces are preventing people from taking control of their health and actually encouraging them to gain weight – forces so powerful that nothing short of a revolution will be able to stop them.”

Since birth we’ve been bombarded with millions of ads that turn us into happily paying consumers of the very things that make us sick. Now the only way for us to become and stay healthy for life is to train ourselves to see through all the commercial deception and brainwashing, and learn how to be healthy.

We cannot expect a solution from those who don’t have our best interest at heart. More people die each year in the United States from medical errors than from highway accidents, breast cancer or AIDS, a federal advisory panel reported. The report from the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine cited studies showing between 44,000 and 98,000 people die each year because of mistakes by medical professionals. This report was in 1999... since then the number of deaths from medical errors has steadily increased.

The numbers are simply staggering: Every year 1.5 million people are sickened or severely injured by medication mistakes, and 100,000 die. And yet all of those deaths are preventable. What's the answer?

We have to take matters into our own hands. And when we learn how to take care of ourselves and our loved ones, we learn something equally important at the same time: How to help the other half of the population that is constantly and chronically ill.

Wellness - The Biggest Opportunity of The 21st Century

Professor Pilzer defines the wellness industry as the next big boom that will revolutionize our lives.

“We are now at the very beginning of the next trillion dollar industry”, he writes in The Wellness Revolution, “an industry that will impact almost every aspect of our lives and achieve $1 trillion in sales within 10 years, but one that is as unknown today as the automobile industry was in 1908 or the personal computer industry was in 1981.

"In order to define the wellness industry and identify its opportunities, we must first distinguish it from a related industry based on some of the same technology – the current $1.5 trillion ( U.S. ) healthcare industry. … Healthcare is a misnomer, as this one seventh of the economy is really devoted to the sickness business... The sickness business is reactive. Despite its enormous size, people become customers only when they are stricken by and react to a specific condition or ailment. No one really wants to be a customer". Medical doctors know a lot about medicine, but very little about health... yours or theirs.

To paraphrase the French writer, historian, and philosopher, Voltaire, "Medical Doctors are people who prescribe drugs of which they know little, to treat diseases of which they know less, in human health of which they know nothing."

"In the next 10 years, an additional $1 trillion of the U.S. economy will be devoted to the yet-unnamed wellness business… The wellness business is proactive. People voluntarily become customers – to feel healthier, to reduce the effects of aging, and to avoid becoming customers of the sickness business. Everyone wants to be a customer of this earlier stage approach to health." Don't miss out on this $100 Billion per year market.
